Smartsheet Timeline with Key Milestones

Learn how to create a OnePager timeline from Smartsheet that highlights the key milestones in your project.

If your Smartsheet projects have a mixture of tasks and milestones, OnePager lets you highlight the most important milestones at the top of your timeline for better visibility.

OnePager is the timeline tool of choice for people who manage their projects in Smartsheet. OnePager makes it easy to highlight the key milestones from Smartsheet so that they're visible to stakeholders and leadership. Don't have OnePager yet? Download a 15-day trial and follow along:

  1. We'll start in Smartsheet where we have project with a mixture of tasks and milestones. We can decide which rows from Smartsheet to include in our OnePager timeline by using a checkbox column, like this:

  2. Launch OnePager by clicking the button on your desktop:

    Launch OnePager to import from Smartsheet.

  3. On the start screen, click NEW to start building a new project timeline. When the import wizard appears, connect to Smartsheet to import your project:

  4. OnePager will present you with a list of available Smartsheet projects. Select the one that you'd like to use to create your timeline, and then click OK:

  5. Back on the import wizard, give your timeline a name. Then, click Next followed by Create new chart

  6. OnePager will initially create a project timeline from Smartsheet that looks like this:

    Notice that in this timeline, the milestones are interspersed with the tasks, and aren't very easy to see. In the new few steps, we'll walk you through how to move the milestones to the top of the chart so that they really stand out.

Moving Milestones to the Time Axis

Let's take the timeline that we just created from Smartsheet and move the milestones up to the top of the chart, near the time axis, so that they've more visible to leadership.

  1. Go to Home > Chart Properties > Time Axis and click on the Time Axis Milestones button:

    Put milestones on the time axis in your project timeline.

  2. Check the boxes to Allow milestones on the time axis and to Move all milestones to the time axis. If you want to move some, but not all of your milestones to the top of your timeline, you can leave this second box unchecked. We'll also tell OnePager to position the milestones Above the time axis:

  3. Click OK and OnePager will adjust your project timeline so that all of the milestones from Smartsheet appear at the top:

  4. With the milestones at the top of the chart, you might want to add their dates so that your leadership knows exactly when each milestone is coming due. To do this, go to Home > Chart Properties > Milestones and check the box to enable Date Labels:

  5. Click OK and OnePager will add dates to the milestones in your timeline:
