Smartsheet Summary Tasks

How to create a new parent task in Smartsheet.

This article will show you how to create the beginnings of a work breakdown structure in Smartsheet by creating parent tasks that summarize your child tasks.

To add s summary task in Smartsheet, follow these steps:

  1. In Smartsheet, open a simple project consisting of a basic task list with no parents or children:

  2. In this example, we will add two summary tasks: one for Tasks 1-3, and a second for Tasks 4-6. The first step is to insert a new task above Task 1 and Task 4. To do this, right-click on the task in question and select Insert Row.

Insert a blank row into Smartsheet

  3. After inserting the new rows, you will have empty fields under Task Name.. In these empty cells, enter your summary task names, which will be "Summary A" and "Summary B."

    Name your Smartsheet summary tasks.

  4. Highlight the rows for Task 1-3 and then click the Indent button in the top ribbon. Do the same for Tasks 4-6.

Indent child tasks under summary tasks in Smartsheet.

  5. The final result is that Tasks 1-3 are now the children of Summary A, while Tasks 4-6 are the children of Summary B:
