OnePager Express: A Primavera P6 Visualizer creating Excel Gantt Charts

How to visualize Primavera P6 projects using an add-in to Microsoft Excel

If your team uses Oracle Primavera P6 for project and portfolio management, you know that it can be difficult to visualize your plans in P6 by itself. You need to visualize your P6 project plan in a timeline or Gantt chart without redrawing everything by hand in PowerPoint or Visio.

OnePager Express from Chronicle Graphics is a P6 visualizer. It can import your Primavera P6 schedule and create full-color, dynamic Gantt charts and project reports in a matter of minutes. If you don’t already have OnePager Express, you can download a 15-day free trial to see how it works.

Here's how to get started:

  1. Open your Primavera P6 project plan. It will look something like the example below::
Oracle Primavera P6 project plan, badly in need of a visualizer!
  2. Export your Primavera P6 project plan to Excel so that you can visualize it with OnePager Express in the next steps:
Export from Primavera P6 into an Excel spreadsheet.
  3. Exporting from Primavera P6 to Excel is easy and gives you a lot of options. OnePager Express is very flexible, and can visualize as much or as little P6 data as you export. Initially, it's best to export "Activity ID," "Activity Name," "Start" and "Finish." The example below has included a few additional columns which will be useful as we start to visualize the P6 plan.
Set an export template to pull relevant columns from your Primavera P6 project into your Gantt chart. In this case, we created a "OnePager Express" template to use with future Primavera P6 plans that we want to visualize.
  4. When the export is complete, your spreadsheet will look like this:
Oracle Primavera P6 plan exported to Excel. Notice that we've added a column called "Show It". This allows you to filter which tasks and milestones from P6 you want to visualize.
  5. Now, double-click the OnePager Express icon on your desktop. When the Start screen appears, choose New. Choose your Excel spreadsheet as the source file for your visual. This will open the import wizard:
Visualize your Primavera P6 data by importing it into OnePager Express through Excel. Give your P6 visual a name, and pick a status (snapshot) date. If your Primavera P6 plan changes later, you can quickly refresh your visual in OnePager Express.
  6. Next, pick which columns from P6 you would like to include in your OnePager Express visual:
Map your Primavera P6 columns into OnePager Express to create a data-driven P6 visual.
  7. Finally, click the Create new project view button, and OnePager Express will create a dynamic P6 visual in a matter of seconds:

OnePager Express is the easiest way to visualize a Primavera P6 project. Because OnePager Express is a data-driven visualizer, you have lots of options for how to show your Oracle Primavera P6 project plans.
